Vulpeck is a funk band formed in 2011 at the University of Michigan where they all met in a German literature class.
Reviews of their music feature superlative after superlative.
“a group of insanely talented/trained funk musicians”
“officially part of the funk A-list”
“stellar smorgasbord of pure funk-rock heaven”
“Vulfpeck’s music is, above all, joyful. You would have to have a heart of iron to somehow avoid the ecstasy and energy present in their music”
Their website alone is tremendous.
And if you’ve seen the iPhone X ad (watch it here), you’ve heard their music.
In 2015 Vulpeck put out their fifth record, Thrill of the Game. On it was Christmas in LA — a tune that one reviewer called, “an instant holiday classic.” I agree.
Plus, legendary R&B session guitarist David T. Walker sits in on the recording. Walker’s talents have appeared on recordings by Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Martha & the Vandellas, Four Tops, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Billy Preston and the list goes on and on.
I’m going to feature three versions of the song tonight, the original, a mashup (Christmas in LA – All Over The World 2017) which features kids from Ireland, an English choir, french musicians, a Canadian rock band and ends with lead singer Theo Katzmann crowd surfing while singing the song) and a very energetic live recording from Belgium.
Christmas in LA is a great tune and well worth a listen.
