Yes, The Brits Make The Best Christmas Commercials

December 2, 2015

John Lewis is an upscale department store in the UK. Since 2010, they’ve produced an annual Christmas commercial. If you’re unaware of these commercials, you’ve missed out (at least we have the internets to watch all the older versions).

So why am I featuring ads in a Christmas music blog? Along with each John Lewis ad is a soundtrack generally featuring an up and coming female vocalist. This year’s vocalist is Aurora. She’s covering a 1994 Oasis tune titled, Half the World Away.  (Among the other featured vocalists were Gabrielle Aplin, Lily Allen and Ellie Goulding.)

Plus the ads are just great and will likely get your Christmas spirit pumping.

As a side note, the John Lewis ads have spurred other big production Christmas ads in the UK including Sainsbury’s and Kwik Fit (scroll down for those – the kwik fit ad is adorable).

I’ll post the latest John Lewis ad along with a few of my favorites from year’s past.

Yep, This Is An Ad For A Grocery Store

December 11, 2014

A few years back I became aware of the wonderful John Lewis store Christmas ads. It seems they are not alone in producing big budget, long ads. Sainsbury’s is a UK grocery store. This year the Sainsbury’s ad tells the story of the 1914, WWI Christmas Truce (Christmas Eve marks the 100th anniversary of the event). Pretty powerful ad. Tonight, I’ll feature the ad, a short documentary on the Christmas Truce and how the Sainsbury’s ad came to be. And then John McCutcheon’s great song, Christmas In The Trenches regarding the same incident.
