Featuring June Christy’s Excellent “This Time of Year” From 1961

December 13, 2015

June Christy, born Shirley Luster, was an American singer, known for her work in the cool jazz genre and for her silky smooth vocals. Her success as a singer began with The Stan Kenton Orchestra. She pursued a solo career from 1954 and is best known for her debut album Something Cool. After her death, she was hailed as “one of the finest and most neglected singers of her time.”

Christy was born in Springfield, IL in 1925 and grew up in Decatur, IL. She moved to Chicago after high school and eventually to California where she became Kenton’s lead vocalist.

This Time if Year is an exceptional record. However, if you’re looking for covers of Christmas standards, this is not the record for you. In fact, AllMusic.com’s review says, ” This Time of Year remains the Christmas album of choice for those who feel a little out of step with the holidays.” Which is not to say it’s depressing — it’s just different. But if you like jazzy vocals, then give her a listen. It’s an excellent recording.
