The Wonderfully Talented Brooke Waggoner

December 4, 2017

Admittedly up until a few weeks ago I had not heard of Brooke Waggoner. Noticing she’s based in Nashville I assumed she must be some relation to the late country star, Porter Waggoner. She’s not.

Ms. Waggoner was born in Houston, TX and is a classically trained pianist. In 2006, she graduated from LSU with a degree in music composition and orchestration. Since 2007 she has released four records, all independently with all of the music being fully written, arranged and orchestrated by herself. That’s a feat!

In a review of her album, Originator, Indie Vision Music said Waggoner “…tends to craft all of her music using live instruments in lieu of loops and electronic elements. Her songs are (obviously) piano driven, play heavy of atmosphere and have a whimsical air to them.” Adding, “Her music is a bit hard to pin down.” And while her style may not check a designated box, she is a very talented singer/songwriter.

I’ll feature two songs from Waggoner tonight, Christmas Moon, a single she released in 2008 and her tremendous cover of the Christmas classic, Oh Christmas Tree.

Waggoner’s cover of Christmas Tree is available free from NoiseTrade.

Farewell Jingle Bells

December 26, 2016

On his 1996 release, A Dave Brubeck Christmas, the legendary jazz pianist lends his signature style to traditional Christmas favorites and original Christmas compositions. This album is in his words, ” a very personal statement that speaks to the curious mixture of both the joy and the melancholy of Christmas.”

Tonight I’ll feature the very fitting, Farewell Jingle Bells.

Nuclear Winter Wonderland & Frosty’s Death March

December 16, 2016

I think it’s just a coincidence that I’m doing back to back days of tunes in minor keys. When I scheduled Nuclear Winter Wonderland (Winter Wonderland in a minor key) I figured everyone might just need something completely different – and this fills the bill (and just happens to follow Frightened Rabbit)

The artist is Sean Wesche who by all accounts is a software engineer (his website is blank and his facebook pace doesn’t reveal much detail — as it should be). The record is Evil Christmas Carols and the titles alone should make you laugh

  • Sleigh Ride (Lovely Weather for Pedestrian Casualties)
  • Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (and Reaper of Souls)
  • It Came Upon a Midnight Clear (to Kill You While You Sleep)
  • The Twelve Days of Christmas (Each More Horrifying Than the Last)

I think Wesch has a sense of humor. Oh, he’s a pretty good pianist to boot.

Since we’re in the spirit I’ll feature another fun little diddy, Zombie Christmas by Emmy the Great & Tim Wheeler.
