Let’s Make A Baby King – Jesse Winchester

By most, Jesse Winchester is not well known as a singer/songwriter. In the music industry it’s quite a different story. His music has been recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Wynona Judd, Emmylou Harris, Ronnie Hawkins, Wilson Pickett and many others (he’s released 16 records during his career).

Born in 1944, Winchester was of prime age to be drafted into the Vietnam war. Receiving his draft notice in 1967, Winchester chose instead to move to Canada as a draft resister, eventually becoming a Canadian citizen.

Upon his election in 1976, President Jimmy Carter declared he would grant amnesty to draft evaders, except those who had deserted or had become citizens of another country. Since Winchester was already a Canadian citizen, he sought out President Carter to convince him to broaden the amnesty. Carter did — shortly afterwards Winchester returned to the states taking up residence in Virginia.

Winchester died April 11, 2014 of bladder cancer. During his treatment, he recorded a new record, “A Reasonable Amount of Trouble.”  It was released posthumously, in August of this year.

Winchester never recorded a Christmas record but did write and record what can certainly be called a Christmas themed song, “Let’s Make a Baby King,” as part of his 1988 CD, Humour Me. I’ll feature that song tonight.

Let’s Make a Baby King

Let’s Make A Baby King

Once upon a Christmas morning
There was a pretty little baby boy
It seems like I remember sadness, mingling in the joy
Cause Mary saw the future and the sadness it would bring
That’s how come Mary started crying
When she heard the angels sing.

Let’s make a baby king
Let’s make him lord of all
Let’s give him everything
Let’s make a baby king.

Well, now you remember little King David
Well he’s this little baby’s kin
He’s cousin to a man named John
And I know you all remember him
And John said ‘Let’s get ready, herald angels sing,
Cause this old world sure needs to know
The good news that I bring.

Let’s make a baby king
Let’s make him lord of all
Let’s give him everything
Let’s make a baby king.

Let’s make a baby king
Let’s make him lord of all
Let’s give him everything
Let’s make a baby king.

We could use a revolution
The whole world’s upside down
We need a new direction
We got to turn this whole thing around
We need a lord to guide us
And teach us wrong and right
We need a lamb to lead us, into a land of light.

Let’s make a baby king
Let’s make him lord of all
Let’s give him everything
Let’s make a baby king.

Well, now, once upon a Christmas morning
There was a pretty little baby boy
It seems like I remember sadness, mingling in the joy
Cause Mary saw the future and the sadness it would bring
That’s how come Mary started crying
When she heard the angels sing.
