Two Jazz Trios Via Ramsey Lewis & Eddie Higgins

Born, raised and still residing in Chicago, Ramsey Lewis released two Christmas records in the early 60’s, “Sounds of Christmas” (1961) and “More Sounds of Christmas” in 1964. They’re both good (but brief). Sounds of Christmas in my opinion is better. You’ll hear Lewis’ version of Sleigh Bells often on the radio. A few of the songs though don’t get much airplay. I’ll feature a couple of those tonight.

Then there’s the Eddie Higgins. Higgins was born and raised in Massachusetts but cut his musical teeth in Chicago. Higgins style is similar to that of Ramsey Lewis — piano driven jazz. For the most part, I can’t recall ever hearing an Eddie Higgins Trio Christmas tune on the radio. Surprisingly though, he comes up from time to time on my Vince Guaraldi Holiday Pandora station. Go figure.

Anyway, if you like jazz trio Christmas music, you’ll enjoy this post.
