Dave Brubeck and Yo-Yo Ma – Joy To The World

The great jazz pianist Dave Brubeck passed away today — he would’ve turned 92 tomorrow.  Brubeck recorded dozens of records over the years — probably sat in on thousands.

Brubeck’s wiki reports just one Christmas recording — uniquely titled, “Christmas,” (a 1996 release).

Amazon.com however has another title, “A Christmas Portrait.”

If you’re not familiar with Dave Brubek, my guess is you’ve heard the tune “Take Five” somewhere — in a movie, in a commercial, on the radio.

Brubeck apparently was actively playing piano until even the past few days (not bad an 91+).

Back in 2008 Yo-Yo Ma released a “holiday” album titled “Songs of Joy & Peace.” I thought Songs of Joy And Peace was very disappointing but did feature a solid rendition of “Joy To The World,” featuring Dave Brubeck. (It’s the same version from Brubeck’s Christmas CD. )
