four from sufjan stevens

i first discovered sufjan stevens singing a song about john wayne gacy.  it’s not a christmas song by any stretch (but worth a listen when you get a chance — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otx49Ko3fxw). it’s a haunting little ditty that manages to capture the horror that was john wayne gacy.

i then discovered that stevens is a christian who had released “songs for christmas,” a five volume set of christmas songs he created/produced initially for his friends (and eventually for wide release).

while christmas is a joyous occasion for most people, the holiday brings back memories for some that are not always happy — and stevens has a unique ability to write and sing about those times (good and bad).

stevens’ christmas work is a regular part of my christmas playlist so i’m highlighting four sufjan stevens songs today (you can snag all of his music from his website: http://asthmatickitty.com/songs-for-christmas

“that was the worst christmas ever” (not a happy song – but man does he capture the emotion of a crappy christmas)

“sister winter” (i love this song because the character in it initially “has the blues,” —

“Oh my heart I
Would clap and dance in place
With my friends I have so
Much pleasure to embrace

But my heart is
Returned to sister winter
But my heart is
As cold as ice

but he snaps out of it — and the song does too (brilliant songwriting).

“put the lights on the tree” – a happy number subtly reminding you to call your grandparents

“c’mon let’s boogey to the elf dance” — another very happy tune

“that was the worst christmas ever”

“sister winter”

“put the lights on the tree”

“c’mon let’s boogey to the elf dance”
